AI and learning

Social feeds are not the only design that reaches into a child’s mind. Tools that write, draw, and answer on demand can help—or they can take the practice that builds creativity and real understanding.

Two pressures, one reclaim

We see two pressures that often travel together.

One pulls attention outward—endless feeds shaped to keep eyes moving.
The other pulls effort toward a shortcut—finished work without the learning that finished work used to require.

Both can leave a young person busy and still under-practiced: less deep focus, less ownership of their own ideas, more habit of asking a machine before asking themselves.

Feeds steal time and focus. Default AI can skip the work of learning.

What we mean by creativity and intelligence here

We do not mean test scores or “giftedness.” We mean everyday powers that grow with use:

Muscles grow when they work. Minds are not so different.

How this pressure works

This is not magic and not doom. It is habit and design.

What is at stake

Childhood and the teen years are when attention, judgment, and creative voice are still being built. If shortcuts become normal before those skills are strong, school and life can get harder in quiet ways: work that looks finished but cannot be explained; less confidence without a tool; thinner originality; weaker memory of what was “written.”

Families already feel this at the kitchen table: a child who can produce a page but cannot explain it; a teen who will not sketch, draft, or struggle first.

We are not saying every use is harmful. We are saying early, constant, unexamined use is a developmental risk worth naming—beside the risk of attention capture by social feeds.

What we are NOT claiming

We ask for sequence and honesty: skills first, tools second—and clear shared rules, the same way we ask for limits on feeds.

A careful note: generative AI can help when it supports practice. The risk we watch is when it becomes a shortcut that skips the work of learning—thinking, drafting, and making your own ideas.

UNESCO on keeping human thinking in the loop:

In a field experiment cited by that OECD report, students with GPT-4 did better short-term—but performed about 17% worse once access was removed, unless the tool was designed to tutor rather than hand over answers.

Common Sense Media survey of U.S. teens (self-report—not a lab proof of harm):

About 7 in 10 teens use AI for schoolwork. Among AI users, 38% say the tools lead them to develop fewer of their own ideas, and nearly 4 in 10 feel they are missing out on learning when they use AI to complete assignments.

Generative AI ideas made many writers' stories more creative and enjoyable; however, "generative AI–enabled stories are more similar to each other than stories by humans alone," with a risk of "losing collective novelty."
